Aging Makeup Mistakes

THICK FOUNDATION
Heavy makeup is a one-way ticket to looking older than you actually are. Choose a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer,and after you apply it, press a damp makeup sponge into areas where you have wrinkles to soak up any excess. While the less-is-more maxim may seem counterintuitive, the more skin you can see, the better. As long as it is well-hydrated, fresh skin looks much more youthful than an obviously covered complexion.


BASE THAT'S TOO LIGHT
Foundation that's paler than your natural skin tone exaggerates fine lines. Even if you have ivory skin, you need to go a little bit warmer as you get older. Switch to a hue that's one or two shades darker and has luminescent particles. A light-reflective formula makes the skin look like it's glowing.

HEAVY CONCEALER ON DARK CIRCLES
The skin under the eyes gets thinner as we age, making thick cover-up look like concrete. Keep it light and apply it with a brush. The brush distributes the color more evenly. And put it only on dark areas, not under the entire eye.

Neon Nails
Fluorescent lights don't flatter our complexion—and neon shades on our nails don't help, either. For 2010, it's a softer, gentler nail color we crave. The spring colors from Yves Saint Laurent, Maybelline New York, and Essie (to name a few) include gorgeous pastel pink, blue, and lilac polishes. But beware: Matching pastel shades on hands and feet can be "a little nauseating," says Ji Baek, owner of the Rescue Beauty Lounge nail salons in New York City. The experts recommend keeping nails short, and wearing a light shade on the hands and a richer version on toes. Until the new spring colors hit shelves in February, try the periwinkle Revlon Nail Enamel in Not So Blue-Berry, the pale purple OPI Nail Lacquer in Do You Lilac It?, and the aptly named Rescue Beauty Lounge polish in Pepto Pink.

Winged-Out Liquid Liner
Leave the long, black wings to the birds this season. While a tiny uptick of liner at the eyes' outer corners is flattering (it makes eyes look lifted), extreme elongation (à la Amy Winehouse) looks dated. What feels right now: a thin, wing-free strip of black cream liner paired with bright shadow colors. At the spring Carolina Herrera show, makeup artist Diane Kendal drew the black cream just along the upper lashes, dusting sparkly gold shadow over the lids. At Michael Kors, makeup artist Dick Page chose amethyst shadow, and applied black liner along the inner rims of the eyes and the lash lines.

Overdone '80s Makeup
Major color on the eyes and lips is over, but focusing all the brightness just on the lips looks fresher than ever. So, that's big color, lips only. Need proof? Check out the brilliant orangey-red kissers at Prada and Giambattista Valli. Apply vivid lipstick shades to just the center of the mouth, then spread the color around with your finger so the edges don?t look severe.When your lips are this bold, you don't need much more than mascara and a bit of soft blush.

Matte Nail Polish
As quickly as this trend appeared , it's now on the way out. And good riddance, because matte manicures aren't nearly as flattering as shiny ones. Instead, we're celebrating shine in 2010—particularly in the form of a glossy shade of taupe. Brownish grays reigned at the spring shows this season, appearing at Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Hervé Léger, and Chanel.

Black Lipstick
It started on our nails, then our lips—but it's time to deep-six the goth-chick look for good. This season, it's all about pretty, glittery gloss. "Coral is gorgeous with olive skin," says makeup artist Chrisanne Davis.Baby pink glosses are pretty on pale skin , while rosy pinks look great on medium to darker complexions.

Intensely Dark Brows
It's time to lighten up and embrace natural-looking brows. If you're a blonde or a redhead, use a powder one shade darker than your brows. If you're brunette, go a shade lighter. Makeup artist Diane Kendal likes to apply the powder with an angled eyebrow brush, starting at the inner corners and feathering it out in short strokes. Set the color with clear brow gel or clear mascara.

Brown-Based Blush
Get ready for something more flushed this spring.Loves the bold pinks and oranges (check out Louis Vuitton's spring show for an extreme version of this look). To keep strong colors from looking fake, the pros suggest topping them with highlighter (we recommend Benefit High Beam Luminescent Complexion Enhancer), then blending like crazy. "You should see no distinct edges," says makeup artist Dick Page. "I cringe when I see these colors turn into racing stripes." Bluish pink is amazing on fair complexions, while intense red blush looks robust on medium skin. Peaches are prettiest on olive coloring,and deep, rosy pinks flatter darker tones.

Twilight Inspired Make Up and Hair

Glowing Skin
Twilight's vampires may sparkle like diamonds in the sun, but mortals like us look best with just a touch of strategically placed highlighter. Sweep a cream or powder along the tops of the cheekbones, then dab what's left on one finger on the tip of your nose (trust us—it balances the look). A golden hue is best for dark skin, while a champagne-colored or pinkish shade flatters fairer skin tones. And everyone should avoid colors that are too frosty—they can make skin look ashen.

Just-Bitten Lips
No need to draw blood to get the effect—a lip stain in a cherry or berry shade, applied more heavily in the middle of the mouth, will do the trick. Draw on a liquid stain or dab a deep berry or burgundy lipstick onto your mouth with your fingers, and press lips together.

Smooth Hair
It rains over 100 inches a year in Forks—so where's the frizz? We're guessing it's keeping the movie-set hairstylists pretty busy—unless they, too, have found the only secret weapon that works: the MIT research that went into the Living Proof No Frizz line of stylers. Instead of temporarily masking fuzz with loads of silicones that weigh down your hair, these products form a feather-light coating over hair that actually keeps humidity from seeping in and wreaking havoc in the first place.

Pale Skin
What do beauty editors and the Cullen kids have in common? You got it—a fear of the sun. But you don't have to hide in a cave to keep your skin protected; just make sure to slick on a broad-spectrum sunscreen (they protect you from both UVA and UVB rays) before leaving the house. The most potent sun-blocking ingredients include Mexoryl, Helioplex and Active Photobarrier Complex .Choose at least an SPF 30, and really slather it on—it takes a teaspoon or two of cream to protect your face and another few to keep your neck shielded.

Sexy Eyes
First, apply a chestnut shadow over your lids just up to the crease. The important thing is to choose one with a matte, powdery consistency—creams and shimmers reflect too much light. Then line both the upper and lower lash lines with a soft-tipped chocolate-colored pencil, and smudge with your fingertips.

An Even Complexion
Even with all the sunscreen in the world, those who actually venture outside in the daylight are destined to earn some dark spots on their skin. To lighten them, dab spots every night with a cream containing 2 percent hydroquinone or both niacinamide and glucosamine. When used along with SPF 30 sunscreen, they should fade in three to six months. A glycolic acid peel used once a week can help speed things up.

Shiny Hair
Whether you've got long, straight locks like Bella or an Alice-esque pixie, any style looks best when hair has a glossy finish. An at-home glaze,coats each strand for maximum luster. Plus, it can last through several shampoos—without flattening the hair the way that some silicone-based serums can.

Piercing Eyes
Since we're mere mortals, our eyes may not change colors with our moods. But they can—with the right shadow shade. Purple eye shadows, like the ones used at the spring Versace show, can bring out the golden flecks in brown and green eyes. If your eyes are blue, go with bronze or peachy shades like the pros used backstage at Derek Lam .

Party Make Up Mistakes To Avoid

Matching your makeup to your outfit
Matchy-matchy is tacky. "If you're dressed to the nines, your face should be low-drama," says makeup artist Jemma Kidd. That means if your clothes are bright, stick to a neutral palette; if your outfit is metallic, avoid shadow and lipstick with shine, and go with smoky eyeliner.


Playing up your eyes and lips
Make a decision—it's one or the other, not both. If you accentuate your eyes, wear lip gloss in a shade that's transparent, like champagne, says makeup artist Troy Surratt. If you focus on your lips, do the reverse and brush on soft brown eye shadow.

Shining too brightly
There should be only one disco ball at any party. To make your skin look dewy, apply shimmer—not glitter—strategically (and sparingly) to one feature. On the eyelids and inner corners, try a creamy shadow or a gleaming highlighter; apply a powder highlighter on the cheekbones; or go with a sparkling nude lip gloss.

An unbelievable bronze
"Women often choose a bronzer that's too dark for their skin and blend it all over their face," says makeup artist Mally Roncal. The trick is picking the right one: Make sure it's a powder and that it's golden, not orangey or muddy brown. (If you're fair, look for a bronzer that's tan or honey-colored; for medium skin, a medium brown or terra-cotta bronzer is ideal; and for dark complexions, try a deep, coppery shade. Just don't go more than one shade darker than your skin tone.) Load it onto a powder brush, tap off the excess, and then start applying it to your jawline, nose, cheeks, forehead, and even your chin.

Heavy metal
Take a lesson from Midas: Not everything you touch should turn to gold (or silver, or copper, or bronze). Choose two features—max—to highlight with metallic makeup.


Red lipstick that bleeds
Crimson looks best when it's painted on with precision. Start with smooth, balm-coated lips. To keep the color from bleeding, trace the border of your mouth with a liner that matches the natural color of your lips, then fill in the rest. Apply lipstick with a small, synthetic lip brush: Start in the center of the mouth and work the color outward.


Too much powder
A little of the powdery stuff goes a long way. Before you head out, apply a light dusting of loose powder or a very fine pressed powder to help your makeup stay put and keep shine to a minimum. Later,after dancing, don't cake on more powder to get rid of the shine. Instead, use oil-blotting sheets.They're quick, disposable, and you don't need a mirror to use them.


Fading makeup
Beyond a tube of lipstick, pack these makeup essentials to keep your look going strong all night long:

* Concealer. Nothing kills your confidence like a blemish that shows up out of nowhere.
* Cotton swabs rolled in eye shadow: store them in a cigarette case, and freshen your shadow in seconds.
* Black eyeliner. As the night progresses, line the inner rim of your eyes with it. All of a sudden, you feel sexy. It's instant fierceness.
* Bold cream blush. Pack the brightest one you have, and blend it on the apples of your cheeks to refresh your look.Even if you don't have any color left on your lips or eyes, it always works.
* A light-colored lipstick or gloss. Any pale pink shade will do.

Sexiest Makeup Looks of All Time

Smoky eyes
Give eye makeup a bedroom-y kind of sex appeal by working in layers and smudging it along the way. First up, creamy black pencil—wedged into the upper and lower lashes and softened by gently rubbing with your finger or cotton swab. Trace over that with black shadow and smudge with the swab. Then sweep shimmery gray shadow over the upper lids and blend it up beyond the crease (the more tangled it is with the black, the better).


Glossy nude lips
There's no simpler way to get a sex-kittenish pout. Choose a nude that's slightly pink or flecked with shimmer (they're the most flattering), and concentrate the gloss on the center of the lips (that's the most fattening).


Dewy skin
Fake a glow with powder highlighter: a champagne shade if you have fair skin, a golden tone for medium or olive skin, or copper for dark skin. Dust it over your cheekbones, then dab some at the inner corners of your eyes, on the centers of your lids, and on the bow of your lips.

Red lips
The trick here is to pick a formula that looks moist (that's sexy), but not superglossy (that can verge into slutty territory). Look for lipsticks with "moisturizing," "creamy," or "butter" in their names, and select one that has a little brown in it.



Gold shadow
The key to making eyes glisten with gold: Choose a shimmery shade, and don't be skimpy with it. Spread a layer or two of gold over the lids and up beyond the creases, and don't forget to dab some at the inner corners of the eyes. When it comes to adding liner to the look, a smudgy chocolate brown looks way better than your usual black.



Full lashes
Create the effect of huge doe eyes by gluing on a few clusters of fake lashes before you layer on the mascara. Grab each cluster at its base with tweezers, dip the root in glue, wedge it into the outer corner of the upper lash line, and hold it in place for 15 seconds so it stays put.


Flushed cheeks
We all know what a vibrant pink glow evokes. What we don't all know is how to duplicate one believably: First, brighten skin all over with a slightly shimmery foundation—you can make it yourself by adding a few drops of liquid bronzer to your normal base. Then rub rosy cream blush on the apples of your cheeks and blend it back along your cheekbones using a few fingers—the heat of that skin-on-skin contact will cause the blush to melt beautifully.


Rose-bitten lips
Give lips a juicy, just-been-kissed look by dabbing them with sheer strawberry-colored lipstick or balm. Concentrate the color in the middle of the mouth and blend outward—that gives the most natural effect.


Strong brows
Think Brooke Shields next time you tweeze your brows. Pull out only the strays that fall well outside your brow line, and then get to work filling with brow pencil and powder. The pencil is for bald spots: Use short, light strokes to draw in missing hairs. The powder is to make brows look thicker: Load some on an angled brush and gently stroke through the entire brow. Finish by running a spooley brush through to blend all your handiwork.



Kohl-rimmed eyes
It's the signature look of vixens and rock goddesses—and all it takes is black liner and some subtle blending.

1. Choose a waterproof pencil, so you can darken even the inner rims. Run the liner just inside the upper lids, then close your eyes tightly—this will smudge just the right amount of liner on the inner lids on the bottom.

2. Trace the upper and lower lashes with more black liner, and don't worry about neatness—your mistakes will disappear once you start blending.

3. Smudge the pencil outward with a dense eye-shadow brush or sponge—softening all that black liner will create the illusion of larger, deeper-set eyes.


Bronzed skin
The first trick to using bronzer: Choose powder (it's actually easier to apply than cream), and be sure the shade is more golden than brown and without a speck of shimmer. Second trick: Swirl the brush not just over your cheeks, but along your hairline and jawline and down the bridge of the nose. Make it look authentic by topping it with rosy blush on the apples of the cheeks.



Winged liner
Flicking liner just past the corners of your eyes creates a flirty effect. For the least theatrical take on the look, extend the line just a quarter inch past the corners and give it a soft curve upward.


Soft peach makeup
Peach may not spring to mind when you think "sexy," but consider this: It combines the warmth of bronzer with all the innocence and ease of pink. The best peach shades have hints of pink (when you're talking lipstick and blush) or tones of brown (for eye shadow).


Contoured cheeks
If you weren't born with sculpted cheeks, you can paint them on (trust us, you won't look like a Falcon Crest throwback). First, sweep a matte powder blush under your cheekbones. (Suck in your cheeks to find the spot we're talking about.) If you're fair, use a soft beige blush; for medium skin, try a bronze shade; on dark skin, go with a brown one.
