How To Spot A Fake Scent

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK. If the liquid looks too pale, it could be an alcohol-heavy phony. If it's too dark, it could consist of impure or faux ingredients.

BE A LABEL CONNOISSEUR. If the label is off-kilter, smudged, poorly printed, or misspelled, it's not legit. If the bar code or an identifying mark looks sketchy, it could be a phony.

BUY RIGHT. Top-quality perfumes are sold at department stores, beauty specialty stores such as Sephora, and sometimes high-end boutique pharmacies and apothecaries.

DON'T BE FOOLED. Real fragrances are not sold on tables in tourist hot spots or at flea markets, supermarkets, discount stores, or out of the back of a truck.

BEWARE THE BAIT AND SWITCH. Some unsavory vendors will display the genuine fragrance up front when you're shopping but substitute a fake when handing over your purchase.

Latest Craze in Singapore

Dermatologists have told us that some beauty drinks on the market, like Glowelle (with antioxidants, green tea extract, and beta carotene), will indeed help give you healthier, younger-looking skin. But we were curious to know how the docs would react to a more extreme version of this trend that's happening in Singapore: a coffee by Nescafe that's spiked with a shot of collagen to perk you up in the morning. Dermatologist Jeannette Graf doesn't believe the drink could be harmful, but explains, "It hasn't been proven and has not been studied, so there is no evidence yet. Still, I wouldn't dismiss it." Graf recommends taking omega-3, omega-6, and vitamin D supplements and eating antioxidant-rich foods like berries to really treat your body—and skin—right.

Outdated Trend

Neon Nails
Fluorescent lights don't flatter our complexion—and neon shades on our nails don't help, either. For 2010, it's a softer, gentler nail color we crave. The spring colors from Yves Saint Laurent, Maybelline New York, and Essie (to name a few) include gorgeous pastel pink, blue, and lilac polishes. But beware: Matching pastel shades on hands and feet can be "a little nauseating," says Ji Baek, owner of the Rescue Beauty Lounge nail salons in New York City. The experts recommend keeping nails short, and wearing a light shade on the hands and a richer version on toes. Until the new spring colors hit shelves in February, try the periwinkle Revlon Nail Enamel in Not So Blue-Berry, the pale purple OPI Nail Lacquer in Do You Lilac It?, and the aptly named Rescue Beauty Lounge polish in Pepto Pink.

Winged-Out Liquid Liner
Leave the long, black wings to the birds this season. While a tiny uptick of liner at the eyes' outer corners is flattering (it makes eyes look lifted), extreme elongation (à la Amy Winehouse) looks dated. What feels right now: a thin, wing-free strip of black cream liner paired with bright shadow colors. At the spring Carolina Herrera show, makeup artist Diane Kendal drew the black cream just along the upper lashes, dusting sparkly gold shadow over the lids. At Michael Kors, makeup artist Dick Page chose amethyst shadow, and applied black liner along the inner rims of the eyes and the lash lines.

Overdone '80s Makeup
Major color on the eyes and lips is over, but focusing all the brightness just on the lips looks fresher than ever. So, that's big color, lips only. Need proof? Check out the brilliant orangey-red kissers at Prada and Giambattista Valli. Apply vivid lipstick shades to just the center of the mouth, then spread the color around with your finger so the edges don?t look severe. When your lips are this bold, you don't need much more than mascara and a bit of soft blush.

Matte Nail Polish
As quickly as this trend appeared , it's now on the way out. And good riddance, because matte manicures aren't nearly as flattering as shiny ones. Instead, we're celebrating shine in 2010—particularly in the form of a glossy shade of taupe. Brownish grays reigned at the spring shows this season, appearing at Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Hervé Léger, and Chanel.

Black Lipstick
It started on our nails, then our lips—but it's time to deep-six the goth-chick look for good. This season, it's all about pretty, glittery gloss. "Coral is gorgeous with olive skin," says makeup artist Chrisanne Davis.Baby pink glosses are pretty on pale skin , while rosy pinks look great on medium to darker complexions.

Intensely Dark Brows
It's time to lighten up and embrace natural-looking brows. If you're a blonde or a redhead, use a powder one shade darker than your brows. If you're brunette, go a shade lighter. Makeup artist Diane Kendal likes to apply the powder with an angled eyebrow brush, starting at the inner corners and feathering it out in short strokes. Set the color with clear brow gel or clear mascara.

Brown-Based Blush
Get ready for something more flushed this spring.Loves the bold pinks and oranges (check out Louis Vuitton's spring show for an extreme version of this look). To keep strong colors from looking fake, the pros suggest topping them with highlighter (we recommend Benefit High Beam Luminescent Complexion Enhancer), then blending like crazy. "You should see no distinct edges," says makeup artist Dick Page. "I cringe when I see these colors turn into racing stripes." Bluish pink is amazing on fair complexions, while intense red blush looks robust on medium skin. Peaches are prettiest on olive coloring, and deep, rosy pinks flatter darker tones.

Renounce Your Skin Sins

Skipping Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen
The best way to keep your skin from getting wrinkled, saggy, and speckled is sunscreen, SPF 30 at the minimum. Broad-spectrum formulas (meaning they shield against both UVA and UVB rays) with Mexoryl or Helioplex offer the longest-lasting protection.Apply a whole tablespoon to your face, and the equivalent of a shot glass on your body. For workdays, reapply before your commute home if the sun is still out—even if you'll be in a car. And for days when you'll be outside for an extended period of time, reapply every two hours.

Smoking
Like you need another reason to quit? Seriously—it's time. Because if you keep smoking, you'll not only damage your health, but you'll develop more and more deep wrinkles and blotchier skin tone. In fact, every decade of smoking results in a perceived extra 2.5 years of age, according to research published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Drinking Too Much
Now, we're not taking away all your fun—you can still have a glass of something. But drink more than one cocktail a day, and your skin suffers. Alcohol increases the level inflammatory agents in the bloodstream—"which can hasten skin sagging over time," says Fredric Brandt, a dermatologist in New York City and Coral Gables, Florida.

Picking the Wrong Products
Using stuff that's wrong for your skin type is a hugely common mistake. Here's what you should know:

OILY SKIN: Choose a cleanser with salicylic acid. Fight shine with an oil-free lotion, followed by a mattifying serum that contains aluminum silica. Rub on a chemical exfoliant such as glycolic acid once a week.

SENSITIVE SKIN: Wash with a milky cleanser .Use a fragrance-free, nonirritating sunscreen . Look for anti-aging creams with added hydrators such as hyaluronic acid and shea butter.

COMBINATION SKIN: Choose a foaming cleanser for oily skin. Use a lightweight moisturizer but dab a thicker one on dry spots.

DRY SKIN: Nonsoap creamy cleansers, don't strip away protective oils. A moisturizer with trehalose, will prevent tightness. Apply an anti-aging treatment with retinol every other day (daily use could aggravate dryness). Or switch to a cream with kinetin or the Matrixyl—they're less drying than retinoids.

Ignoring Your Neck and Chest
Skin care doesn't stop at your jawline. These areas are almost always exposed, and yet they rarely receive same level of hydration and sun protection as the face. But the skin there is more delicate and just as vulnerable to photoaging. The fix is simple: The next time you apply serum, face cream, or sunscreen or give yourself an exfoliating treatment, extend everything down to your décolletage.

Overlooking Moles
A study conducted by the National Cancer Institute showed that fifty percent more melanoma cases occurred in women ages 15 to 39 in 2004 than in 1980. The lesson here? Everyone needs to get a mole screening with a dermatologist once a year—and you should also check yourself every month, remembering to examine less-obvious places such as your scalp, the soles of your feet, and under your nails. Look at the American Academy of Dermatology's guidelines here. Even if your moles pass the test, don't underestimate the power of gut instinct: "If you look at something twice," says Philadelphia dermatologist Eric Bernstein, "show it to a dermatologist."

Using Dirty Makeup Brushes
Skip washing your brushes and you could wind up with muddied colors, clogged pores, and bacterial infections. Once every three weeks, lather brushes with a gentle shampoo such as Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo, rinse well, and let them dry overnight or use wipes. Another option: Clinique Antibacterial Brush collection—they're treated with a microbial solution that destroys germs. (You still have to wash them, but only about once a month.)

Constant Phone Chatter
Resting your chin or cheek against a phone—cell or old-school—can lead to breakouts, whether or not the phone is clean and bacteria-free.Just leaning your face against it can cause friction, occlusion, and heat, all of which can make you break out. If your chatting habit is too ingrained to shake, consider a headset.

Overexfoliating
Squeaky clean pores may harsh cleansing or too much exfoliating can actually exacerbate oil production and worsen breakouts by spreading bacteria. A gentle alternative: Use a glycolic peel three times a week.

Staying Up Late
Sleep deprivation causes stress, which can aggravate all skin conditions, including acne, eczema, and psoriasis.Sleep is also the time when your body repairs the damage from the day, and interrupting that process will slow down cell turnover. In the short term, this can mess with the way blood flows to the skin, which can make your complexion sallow.

Not Washing Your Face at Night
Letting skin marinate in makeup—not to mention a day's worth of oil buildup—can lead to clogged pores and zits, especially if you're prone to acne.Your body temperature increases slightly when you sleep, which can enhance absorption of whatever's on the surface. So you really want only beneficial ingredients on your face when you sleep.

Eating Junk Food
Conventional wisdom used to be that diet didn't affect your complexion. But sorry—no more. A study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that people who replaced processed carbs with high-protein foods and whole grains broke out less. The reason? "High-glycemic foods cause your blood sugar to rise, triggering a surge of insulin. The insulin stimulates oil-producing hormones called androgens, leaving you with pimples," says Baumann. Cut the junk, and you could see an improvement in acne in about six weeks. Instead, reach for snacks like peanut butter, nuts, and avocado—these healthy fats provide nutrients for the hair, skin, nails, and basic metabolism.

Neglecting Your Eyes
Not only is the skin around your eyes thinner than practically anywhere else on the body, it's also the victim of a lot of abuse. First, resolve to stop rubbing.Every time you do, you risk breaking delicate blood vessels, which leads to darkening, dulling, and thickening of the surrounding skin. Then make sure you always apply an anti-aging eye cream. If retinol is too strong, consider peptides or the current favorite ingredient for the eye area, zinc It's been shown to increase elastin production, which can reduce crepiness.

Popping Zits
It's tempting. But the reality is that squeezing a pimple just pushes bacteria deeper into the pores, causing inflammation, infection, and scarring—and almost doubling the zit's life span (from about one week to two). Napalming it with the harshest chemicals in the bathroom won't help, either.Treating any breakout with too much benzoyl peroxide damages the skin around the spot and can cause more irritation. Here's what you should do: Use a spot treatment with no more than 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide at night, and reapply it to major zits in the morning. For persistent acne, a prescription retinoid, such as Retin-A, helps prevent blocked pores—but doctors warn it can exacerbate the redness of existing pimples, so avoid slathering it over full-blown ones.

Skipping the Gym
Along with lifting your mood, exercise increases blood flow to the skin, causing a healthy-looking flush. Both immediately and over time, it has been shown to decrease tension, which can result in better skin. When you're stressed, cortisol levels rise, and that leads to acne and other skin aggravations.Lessen your cortisol spikes, and your skin will become smoother and clearer.

Tanning
Bronzer? Fine. Self-tanner? Fine. The real thing? So not fine.In trying to protect itself from continued exposure to the sun, skin thickens and produces melanin, the pigment that darkens cells.Any pigment change from UVA or UVB light can cause premature aging and increase the likelihood of skin cancer. And tanning beds can be even worse, since they emit concentrated UVA light, which penetrates deeper than the combination of UVA and UVB rays found in sunlight.Be sure to protect yourself by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 every day, and if you're in the sun, reslather it every two hours. And never, ever use a tanning bed. Instead, try a self-tanner.

Overloading on Products
"I ask patients to walk me through their routine, and they bring in shopping bags full of products," says New York City dermatologist Patricia Wexler. "They add things without checking to see whether they're duplicating ingredients or realizing that some aren't compatible." Sometimes, active ingredients cancel one another out—Other times, they double up and cause irritation or skin damage. "Negative interactions are most likely to happen if someone is treating different problems at the same time, such as sun-damaged skin and adult acne, and the ingredients are either too harsh together or incompatible," says Baumann. The biggest culprits: retinol, glycolic acid (aka AHA's), vitamin C, and benzoyl peroxide—avoid layering them, or at least try to use them at different times of day.

Remedies for Stretch Marks

While stretch marks don’t vanish, they do fade with time. The use of over the counter creams and ointments helps the scars fade. One such effective ointment is cocoa butter cream. It is widely available and will help moisturize skin and is effective in smoothing out scars. In extreme cases patients seek laser therapy and surgery to correct the scars left on the body. These are painful and invasive treatments that serves no great cause. So instead of taking such a drastic step, it would be better to opt for simple and effective home remedies for stretch marks. Though the marks won’t vanish over night, they will fade away with proper treatment and dieting. Try some the following home remedies and observe the progress:

• Lavender Oil – Lavender oil is a highly recommended home remedy for stretch marks. Rubbing a few drops of lavender oil on the affected area twice a day ensures the scars fade quickly. Applying olive oil is also very effective.

• Sandalwood – A great preventive measure for stretch marks is applying sandalwood on the skin daily. It keeps the skin moisturized and prevents it from stretching.

Flatter Belly

You've probably heard that you need about eight glasses of water a day for adequate hydration. Drinking water and even eating "watery" foods like melon, greens, and other fruits and vegetables has enormous health benefits, including warding off fatigue. But perhaps the most important belly benefit of proper hydration is how it helps maintain your body's proper fluid balance and guard against water retention. It also helps prevent constipation, which can cause bloating.

The Water Recipe

2 liters water (about 8 ½ cups)
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
1 medium cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced
1 medium lemon, thinly sliced
12 small spearmint leaves.

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher and let flavors blend overnight.

Drink the entire pitcher by the end of each day.

Lipostabil

Known by different names such as Lipostabil, Lipolysis, Lipotherapy, Flab Jab and even ThinJection. The major elements present in the fat dissolving medical injection administered into the fat cell comprise Phosphatidylcholine (PPC) and L-Carnitine. PPC present in Lipostabil is a soy lecithin substance that is said to be effective in reducing the fatty pads in the treated areas. It appears that PPC is able to enhance cholesterol solubility, change the arrangement of fat deposits, and slow down plaque accumulation in the body. It is believed that the fat injections infiltrate the fat cells, acting as a softening agent making the stored lipids water soluble and disposal through excrement.

Benefits

The results of the Lipo dissolve procedure also vary depending on the dimension of the area being treated. In most cases, people taking the fat dissolving injections experience fat loss of at least 1-5 cm per treatment. Normally, the utmost fat loss owing to the fat injections takes place in the waist or belly region, while the smallest amount of fat loss is noticed in the legs. These weight loss injections are administered over one to three healing sessions each of which are spread over four to six weeks. The results of using the fat dissolving injections are gradually noticeable taking one to three weeks to experience the benefits.

In addition, the L-Carnitine contained in Lipostabil is made in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine. It enhances the use of fat as an energy source by transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they are ‘burned’ to release energy for body functions. L-Carnitine, a major element in the fat dissolving injections, has also been found to avert ischemia-induced heart malfunctioning and delays the progression of Alzheimer’s disease owing to its capability to enhance metabolism. According to the findings of some recent studies, phosphatidylcholine, present in Lipostabil may be used to treat AIDS cases, particularly in the reduction of lipodystrophy – buffalo hump – without the need for surgery.

Side Effects

The Lipo dissolve treatment is accompanied by some rare risks and potential complications such as headaches, nausea, diarrhea as well as blisters, necrosis and scarring at the injection site. The other aftereffects of using the fat dissolving injections include redness, bruising, moderate to severe edema, localized heat, slight to moderate itching. The side effects of using Lipostabil usually occur two to five after administering the fat injections and gradually disappear after three to seven. Edema or swellings caused by taking the fat injections can be reduced by compression of treated area by modeling belt or compressive clothing.

Lipo dissolve treatment may cost anything between $1,000 and $1,500 per treatment with three to six treatments required.

L-carnitine

L-carnitine is an amino acid synthesized from essential amino acids, tysine and methionline in the kidneys and livers. It’s main function is to transport ‘long chain fatty acids’ such as glucose, fats, carbohydrates and proteins, especially from the inter membrane space of the carbohydrates and fats storage areas essentially accumulated from the food we eat and converts it into energy.

In the mitochondria is where fats and carbohydrates is being converted into energy via a process called ‘beta oxidation’ with the help of L-Carnitine which is also responsible for improving oxygen utilization and energy production by the heart muscle.

Thus, L-Carnitine the transporter of fat is needed as well for the removal of products waste or toxins produced from the mitochondria during energy production, enables them to be eliminated from the body
INDICATIONS

1.Weight and Fat Control
L-Carnitine increases our body metabolic rate and is able to convert fats and carbohydrates from our body into energy, a form of protein cocarboxylase and if unused will be exereted via the urine.

For atheletes and sportman, the protein will help to convert fats into muscles mass during activities, therefore L-Carnitine is an essential amino acid for the bodybuilders who wish to have a well built physique naturally.

2.Anti Aging Properties
L-Carnitine have also shown to have anti-aging properties and regular supplement increases the body immune systems by eliminating toxins from the body, for the production of Phophyrin which is needed to produce red blood cells.

In breaking down fats for the production of energy which is also required for the building, repairing and renewal of cell membrane and cellular structures for efficient function of major organs such as heart, lungs, muscles, kidney and liver.

3.Lipids and CHDs (Congestive Heart Diseases)

L-Carnitine helps to maintain normal level of lipids such as cholesterol and especially triglyserides, dissolves fatty acids accumulated in the coronary arteries therefore reducing risks of Congestive Heart Diseases.

Side effects are generally mild. High doses (5 or more grams per day) may cause diarrhea. Other rare side effects include increased appetite, body odor, and rash.

People with the following conditions should talk to their doctor before taking carnitine:

Peripheral vascular disease
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
Alcohol-induced liver disease (cirrhosis)
Diabetes
Kidney disease

Coffee and Cellulite?

Expensive cellulite creams have one ingredient in common – caffeine! Rather spending hundreds of dollars on anti-cellulite product, you can make your own cellulite treatment with caffeinated coffee grounds that works beautifully.

Coffee grounds can also be used an exfoliant. The coarse nature of the substance helps tto remove the dead skin and reduce the size of your pores. The use of coffee grounds on your skin will also firm and tone your skin.

Coffee Body Scrub

2 cups of coarsely ground coffee

1/2 cup raw sugar or sea salt

2-3 teaspoon of olive oil

Mix all ingredients together.
Take a hot shower to moisten your skin and open your pores.
Apply the coffee mixture to your cellulite areas using your hands or a loofah mitt. Using wide circular motions, rub the coffee exfoliate onto your skin with strong pressure.
Shower off, pat skin dry and apply a thin layer of your favorite body lotion.

Natural Cure for Dark Circle

Using Almond Oil

Almond oil as we know is an excellent natural emollient and its fine texture and moisturizing properties is perfect for any skin type. Ayurvedic practitioners love Almond oil and they have been using this oil for dark circles.

Almond oil is readily available from health and aromatherapy stores as it's commonly used as a carrier oil. Carefully rubbing a little in to the skin around your eyes each morning and night should leave the skin softer and more supple.

Using Tomato and Lemon

Tomato is rich in Vitamin A, C and Iron, whereas lemon can act as "natural bleach". By combining the two ingredients, you will notice the dark circle will lightens after a few days of treatment.

To conjure this mixture, take one teaspoon fresh tomato juice. Add to it 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice and a little less than a teaspoon of gram flour. Mix all these thoroughly to make a smooth paste. Apply this paste on the dark circles around the eyes and leave for about 10 minutes.

Before it becomes too dry, start removing by rubbing very gently with your fingers. Later, wash your face. This application is recommended once daily. More quantity of the ingredients can be taken in the proportion specified to have sufficient amount to apply on the whole face.

Using Cucumber Juice

Cucumber has cooling and astringent properties that are very good for tired eyes. This remedy is a "quick-fix" to any eyes woes.

Squeeze the juice from a cucumber and cool it in the refrigerator for an hour or so. Add a little lemon juice. Make cotton pads and dip into the mixture. Place on your eyes for 15 minutes. The effect is cooling and relaxes your eyes.

Make sure to wash the area thoroughly afterwards and apply a little almond oil around the eyes to moisturize the area.

Using Grated Potato

Another effective home remedy is peeled and grated potatoes. Firstly, grate the potato, wrap it in thin cloth and place it over the eyes. Use this overnight at least three times a week.

Make sure to wash the area thoroughly and apply a little cream or oil around the eyes to moisturize the area.

Using Metal Spoons

This is one of the most effective "Old Wives Tales" that don't need much effort.

Cool a metal spoon under the cold tap for a few minutes, dry off the water and hold the spoon to your eyes for at least sixty seconds. Be gentle; don't press too hard.

Turqoise!The Color of 2010!

It is proclaimed that turquoise will be THE color in 2010.The soothing color of the Caribbean sea is the perfect antidote to a stressful 2009.Beautiful ladies has already embracing the turquoise trend, maybe because turquoise looks great with black, grey, white, brown and navy – neutral colors that we already have in our closets.

Rossum rocked a “Mad Men”-style sheath dress with metallic sandals and a gold clutch.

Fox got into the Spring of things in this jersey pencil dress offset by her blue eyes and long, wavy chestnut locks.

Blake showed off her tanned skin – and seemingly endless legs – in a rich turquoise spaghetti-strap romper. She accessorized with a stack of bangles and tousled locks.

Hair Ideas for 2010

Brighten Up
Part hair on the side, then slide a colorful bobby pin in on the opposite side at the spot that lines up above the end of your eyebrow. Then, slide another pin of a different color right above the first one.

Get Rumpled
Shaggy waves are so easy to create, you don't even need a brush. Simply mist damp strands with a volumizing spray and toss your hair around with your hands while blasting it with a blow-dryer. Once hair is dry, wrap just the middle section of inch-wide pieces around a large-barrel curling iron. When finished, shake it all up with your fingers.

Tease Your Ponytail
Fatten up a puny ponytail by using a paddle brush to tease the underside of a low or middle-of-the-head tail with a few broad strokes—not short, quick ones, which can compact the hair too tightly and create a puffball. Skim the brush over the top of the tail to smooth it, then mist with hair spray.

Create Major Volume
Body building is a cinch with these steps:

1. Apply a volumizing mousse throughout damp hair.

2. Remove the nozzle from your dryer. Flip your head upside down, and blow-dry while running a vent brush through hair.

3. When hair is almost dry, flip your head up and finish drying with a medium-size round brush.

4. Working in small sections, lift your hair off your scalp with your fingers as you aim the dryer, set on cool, at your roots—this roughs up the cuticle to add volume. Do this all around your head, then lightly smooth hair with a brush.

Decorate Your Updo
A jeweled barrette dresses up hair that's been gathered back. Fasten the clip just above a high bun or knot, slightly off center at the crown. With a low chignon, place the clip in the hair just above the bun—or, if the barrette is delicate, stick it near the front of your head, lining it up above the arch of one eyebrow.

Extend Yourself
Clip-in hair extensions not only deliver length, they also make fine hair appear thicker. The kind that increase length are wide, stretching from about ear to ear with several clips along the seam. Here's how to put them in:

1. From crown to nape, divide hair into about six ear-to-ear sections, and gather each into a barrette. Leave an inch of space in between sections for thick hair and two inches in between for thin hair.

2. Starting at the nape, take one section, tease hair at the roots, and spritz with hair spray. Fasten the fake hair in place to the scalp as close as you can. Repeat this process with each section until you reach the crown, then check in the mirror to make sure there aren't any visible lumps where the clips are (if so, take out that piece and redo it, making sure there's at least an inch-wide section of your natural hair above it to conceal the clips).

Try a Floppy Braid
A high, fuzzy braid looks cute yet stylish. Start at your crown, and plait the hair tightly all the way down. After securing it with an elastic, tug along the braid's sides to loosen it slightly. This softens the style, but keeps the braid intact.

Keep It Neat
For a bun that's neat but soft, skip the shine products. They can make smoothed-back hair look shellacked. Instead, use an aerosol hair spray to help strands stay in place. Do a light mist all around your head, then make a deep side part (or no part at all) and brush hair back into a chignon.

Be a Tease
Teased waves mimic that just-off-the-beach texture. If you have naturally wavy hair, work a little leave-in conditioner through damp stands and let them dry naturally. If you have straight hair, use a one-inch-barrel curling iron to create relaxed curls. Then, on either hair type, mist texturizing spray all over to make the hair slightly gritty, and use a paddle brush—not a comb—to gently tease it. Start about an inch above the ends and work your way up, stopping a few inches from the roots.

Get Loopy
Polished hair doesn't have to be prissy. Try offsetting a sleek crown with a voluminous bun. Blow-dry hair straight, make a side part, and pull hair back into a tight, low ponytail. Spritz the tail with hair spray and begin to wind it into a bun, but stop after one loop and pin the ends under the elastic.

Rock Out
There's something provocative about hair that's a little roughed up and dirty. To mimic the effect without making hair too rough, finger-comb dry hair with a dab of texturizing cream rubbed between your palms. It coats the strands so they're matte and separated without being greasy.

Create Billowy Waves
To create soft finger waves, it's worth buying a triple-barrel curling iron (about $35 on folica.com). Simply clamp it along dry hair, starting about three inches below the roots. Twist each waved section around your finger, and clip it to your head. When all of your hair has cooled, let it down and gently brush through the waves to soften them.

Rise Up
A high ponytail never goes out of style. But to ensure that frizz and flyaways aren't part of the picture, work a pea-size drop of smoothing lotion into your roots and hairline before blow-drying. Brush the hair back and secure it just below your crown. To make the tail gleam, rub a drop of shine serum between your palms, them run them over the tail from base to ends.

Clip in a Feather
A feathered haircut is outdated. But a feathered hair clip looks striking for evening. Stick with black feathers, and place the clip on the side of your head, close to your face.

Move to the Side
What a difference an inch makes. By placing the classic ballerina bun slightly askew, the style suddenly looks fresh and young. Just be sure to pin it low on the neck and no more than an inch or two off-center—any more is too Princess Leia.

Wave Your Ponytail
Spice up the traditional ponytail with this easy trick: Part damp hair in the middle and gather it into a low ponytail. Braid the tail, and when it dries, undo the braid and brush through it to create a crinkly wave.

Bend Your Ends
The cheater's method to bouncy hair? Just add a few chunky waves on the ends. Hold a one-inch curling iron vertically and wrap inch-wide sections of hair around the barrel from the chin down without clamping the iron shut, leaving the bottom two inches hanging out. Loosen the waves by brushing gently.

Be a Radiant Brunette
To make brown hair even more lush, try going one shade darker than your natural look to a rich chocolate or chestnut color. If your color is almost black, though, warm it up with a few chestnut or caramel highlights. When doing allover color on brunette hair, ask your colorist to skip the ends, which are more porous, and instead apply a tinted gloss treatment on them. Otherwise, the ends can absorb too much dye and look darker than the rest.

Supersize a Twist
Like Elizabeth Taylor's big hairstyles of the '60s, the exaggerated French twist is both elegant and outrageous. Slick hair back into a ponytail and tease it with a fine-tooth comb. Then, using an eight-inch foam hair accessory known as a "rat" (available at beauty-supply stores), wrap the ponytail around it, rolling the rat toward the head until it's completely hidden. The hair clings to the mesh covering, almost like it does to a Velcro roller, so all you need are a few bobby pins along the seam to hold the twist in place.

Add a Flower
A floral hair pin is sweetly romantic—but to keep it from looking juvenile, stick with a soft-colored one. Place it on the side of loose hair just above the ear, or tuck it right above a low bun.

Go Platinum
Yes, it's a bold color choice. But platinum blonde is having a resurgence, and on women with fair skin, it's a cool, almost otherworldly look. If you have yellowish skin, ask your colorist for ashy platinum. If you're pinkish, you need a little gold in your hair. And because bleach is tough on hair, platinum is best for cuts that are shoulder-length or shorter. A weekly deep-conditioning treatment at home is almost a must.

Swirl It Up
Try this trick for a superfast updo: Gather your hair into a high ponytail, then tease the tail with a paddle brush, which will keep your hair from sliding out. Loosely twirl the tail around the base, pin it, then let the flyaways and loose pieces fall where they may.

Come Undone
A little dishevelment in the front keeps an updo from looking rigid. Gently tease your hair with a paddle brush before wrapping it up into a bun or twist. Then, use the pointed side of a rattail comb to loosen the front—slide it vertically into the side of the hair, then gently tug the hair away from the scalp ever so slightly. Use the point to lift out a few pieces at your hairline so they softly drape around your face.

Get Centered
Try switching your part to the middle—it not only gives your cut a new shape, it also evens out volume. A center part looks best with hair that has a little body, so if yours has fallen flat, twist it into a low bun and mist just the bun with a texturizing spray. After 20 minutes, let down your hair and tousle it around with your hands.

Start a Ripple Effect
Rippled waves on hair that's shoulder-length or shorter look elegant without seeming too retro. (See style on the right.) Work a quarter-size drop of serum through damp hair and air-dry. Roll just the front sections with a 3/4-inch iron (curling all the hair can make it poufy), then immediately run a wide-tooth comb through to make loose waves.

Do a Relaxed Twist
Who says a French twist has to be tidy? A slightly wet-looking texture and roughed up finish makes it young and cool. On air-dried hair, work a shine spray or serum from an inch below the roots to the ends. Comb hair back with your fingers without pulling it taut, then roll into a French twist and pin haphazardly. Don't worry about a few pieces falling out—they'll only enhance the look.

Bump Up Your Crown
A smidgen of height at your crown adds a whole lot of sex appeal. For the classic Brigitte Bardot look, blow-dry hair with a round brush, then set it in hot rollers to amp up the volume. After taking out the rollers, part hair in the middle, then lightly tease the underside of the crown with a fine-tooth comb to give it a bit of lift. Skim a paddle brush over the surface of your crown to smooth any fuzz.

Do the Wave
The key to faking supermodel waves is to make the hair look as thick as possible and to keep the ends straight, which gives a more natural-looking finish. Spread mousse throughout damp hair to bulk it up, then blow-dry with a round brush. Next, roll large sections of hair up in a one-inch curling iron, but leave the ends out. When finished, break up the curls with your fingers—not a brush—to keep the volume intact.

Try a White Headband
It's brighter than standard black, but it looks just as clean. Slip on a stretchy, inch-wide headband (any thicker can look like a bandage) so it rests just an inch or two back from the hairline. Don't push it back any further, or else it can slip off.

Create a Rounded Blowout
Think Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface. With a slinky dress, this is still a seductive look for shoulder-length hair. Blow-dry hair straight with a round brush, then make a deep side part. Wind the ends around large hot rollers and leave them in until they've cooled. After taking out the curlers, gently brush through the ends, then rub a drop or two of shine serum between your palms and smooth them over your hair.

Tie on a Colorful Scarf
It's the fastest solution to a bad hair day. Choose a square, printed scarf (solid colors tend to look like a bandage) and fold it in half diagonally to make a triangle. Tie it over the top of your hair and knot it in back. The front should rest no more than an inch down over your hairline (any lower, and you risk Axl Rose comparisons).

Rustle Up
Tousled, barely-there waves make hair look incredibly sensuous. Hold a one-inch curling iron vertically, and wrap just the center of each section of hair—not the roots or ends—around the barrel for only a few seconds. (Any longer and the curl will get too tight.) When finished, flip your head upside down and lightly skim a paddle brush over the curls to break them up, then shake them around with your fingers before bringing your head up.

Make a Messy Doorknob Knot
Step 1. Flip your head upside down and finely mist your roots and hairline with an aerosol hair spray. (This makes the hair a bit coarse, which keeps the style in place.) For fine hair, tease the roots before spraying for fullness. If you have curly hair, skip the spray and instead rub in a dab of styling lotion.

Step 2. Lift your head up, rake your fingers through your hair, then gather it in a loose ponytail just above the nape of your neck. Wrap a thick elastic band around the base twice.

Step 3. Wrap the elastic around a third time, but pull the hair only halfway through, so the knob is on top and the ends poke out underneath. Pull out a few wisps around your face for softness, and tuck any longer pieces behind your ears.

Get Big, Bouncy Curls
Nothing says "bombshell" like a flowing heap of curls. (See style on the left.) Apply mousse throughout damp hair, followed by a little serum on the ends, then blow-dry without a brush. Use a one-inch curling iron to roll hair sections up, from the ends to the scalp, and hold each there for a second. After sliding out the iron, pin the curls to the head. When they've cooled, release the curls and fluff them with a brush.

Wear Hair Halfway Back
To make this style more grown-up, take the top section of your hair from temple to temple and lightly tease the underside with a paddle brush. Skim the brush over the surface of hair to smooth it, then secure at the back of the crown with a simple metal or tortoiseshell barrette.

Create a Romantic Chignon
A rumpled texture and casual pinning make the standard bun look sexier and more youthful. Use a large curling iron to create loose waves (if your hair is naturally wavy, let it air-dry). Gather your hair loosely at the nape and twist it around just once so the bun drapes low. Then, instead of wrapping it with an elastic, stick long bobby pins into the bun haphazardly to secure it, which keeps the style from becoming too tight.

Give Yourself a Smooth Blowout
Using a blow-dryer rather than an iron to straighten hair creates a softer, more natural look. First, blot excess water with a microfiber towel. Then remove the dryer's nozzle and sweep damp hair from side to side with your fingers while blasting it; do this until hair is almost dry. Reattach the nozzle and, working in three-inch sections, pull each one out to the side using a paddle brush—keep your thumb on top of the bristles to help tightly pull the hair smooth all the way through to the ends. Run the dryer up and down each section until dry.
